Why Skin Checks Matter in Central Otago

Living in Central Otago means high UV exposure due to long summers, outdoor lifestyles, and geographical factors. While the sunshine is part of what makes Cromwell special, it significantly increases the risk of skin damage and skin cancer. Regular skin checks are one of the most effective ways to detect skin cancer early—when treatment outcomes are best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about skin checks? We've answered the most common questions our patients ask. If you don't find what you're looking for,
please call us at 03 445 4622.

What is a full skin check? +

A full skin check is a comprehensive head-to-toe examination of your skin to identify early signs of skin cancer or other concerning skin changes. Our clinicians assess moles, spots, and lesions using modern diagnostic tools and clinical expertise to detect issues early, when treatment is most effective.

Do I need a referral to book a skin check? +

No referral is required. You can book directly with Junction Skin Clinic.

How often should I have a skin check? +

We generally recommend an annual full skin check, especially if you:

  • Have fair skin
  • Spend a lot of time outdoors
  • Have a history of sunburn or skin cancer
  • Have a family history of skin cancer

Your clinician may recommend more frequent checks depending on your individual risk.

What should I expect at my first appointment? +

Your appointment will begin with a consultation to understand your concerns and skin cancer risk. This is followed by a detailed skin examination. Any findings are discussed clearly, along with treatment options, next steps, costs, and follow-up if required. There is no pressure to proceed with treatment on the day.

Will I need to undress? +

Yes. For a thorough examination, skin checks are conducted while you are in your underwear. Intimate areas are not routinely examined, but you can discuss any specific concerns with your clinician. Your comfort, dignity, and privacy are always respected.

Can I bring a support person or request a chaperone? +

Absolutely. You are welcome to bring a support person, and a chaperone can be arranged on request.

How should I prepare for my skin check? +

To help us perform the most accurate examination, please:

  • Remove all makeup
  • Remove nail polish from fingers and toes
  • Arrive with clean, slightly damp hair
  • Wear easily removable clothing

These steps help us examine areas such as the scalp and nails more effectively.

Are photographs taken during the skin check? +

Clinical photographs may be taken of lesions of concern for documentation and monitoring. These images are securely stored in your medical record using Derm Engine and may be used for follow-up, referrals, or teaching purposes in a completely non-identifiable way.

What treatments do you offer if something is found? +

If required, treatment options may include:

  • Monitoring with digital imaging
  • Liquid nitrogen (freezing) treatments
  • Biopsies
  • Surgical removal of skin cancers

All treatment options, risks, costs, and aftercare are explained before proceeding.

What does a skin check cost? +

Skin check pricing is discussed at your consultation. Costs vary depending on whether you are an enrolled or casual patient and whether additional treatments are required. Any extra costs are always explained before treatment begins.

Can Southern Cross insurance be used? +

If you have Southern Cross insurance, please advise our team at the time of payment so we can attempt to lodge a claim on your behalf.

Will I need a follow-up appointment? +

Some lesions may require monitoring, biopsy results, or further treatment. If follow-up is recommended, your clinician will explain the timing and purpose, and it is important to attend as advised.

What happens after treatment? +

We provide clear, personalised aftercare instructions to support healing and minimise complications. This may include sun protection, wound care, skincare advice, and follow-up reviews. Our team is available if you have any concerns after your appointment.

Where is Junction Skin Clinic located? +

We are conveniently located at 1A Traders Lane, Cromwell, serving Cromwell, Central Otago, and surrounding regions.
